Sunday in the Park, Goldsboro NC

Karen and I work at the Sunday in the Park event on First Sundays in Goldsboro, sponsored by Wayne County Parks and Recreation and the Wayne County Arts Council. June was a particularly fun day, with big crowds and perfect weather.

The Goldsboro fire department opened a hydrant and set up a power sprinkler so children could play in the water.

We’ll take a break from the stinking heat of July and August and be back on the first Sunday in September, from 2-5 pm. Hope you can come!

Sunday in the Garden, Goldsboro NC

Ubi the Clown and Karen the hula hoop lady brought hoops and balloon animals to Sunday in the Garden for several years. The Arts Council of Wayne County sponsored the event.

The party was a regular part of the September calendar in Goldsboro.

Unfortunately, Hurricane Irene (August 2011) felled several trees in the park. By the time the trees were cleared, the Arts Council had moved to a new location downtown.

Sunday in the Garden was transformed into the Art in the Park event now held at Herman Park during the spring and early fall months.

K-Days in Kinston, NC

Ubi the clown and his partner, Karen the Hoop Lady, have entertained children at K Days at Emma Webb Park in Kinston, NC, more than once. It’s a pleasant Saturday afternoon picnic, with food vendors, a DJ, and plenty of things to do.

Ubi the Clown visits Art in the Park, Goldsboro NC

Art in the Park, sponsored by the Arts Council of Wayne County and the Goldsboro Parks & Rec Department, moved to Herman Park this year.

Ubi made a number of balloon swords, reminding everyone who gets one that people who poke the clown with a sword find themselves deprived of a sword in short order!

On the grandness of Clydefest 2012

Clydefest 2012, held annually in Bynum, NC, to honor the local sculptor Clyde Jones, dawned clear and sunny. It’s been a whole year since a tornado ripped through Sanford into Raleigh, but there were no worries on April 14, 2012! Barely a cloud in the sky.

The gates opened at 11:00 and the children, trailing parents and friends, poured in. The Bynum baseball park quickly filled up with children playing games based on Clyde’s art–fishing for floating fish, throwing bean bags into brightly painted crown tires; painting their own penguins and fish.

Several groups, bands, and entertainers performed under the big tent throughout the day. The Bouncing Bulldogs, from Durham, have won many national and international awards for their jump roping. At the end of their performance, they invited people from the audience to try double-dutch. Their coach says, “Jump rope 10 minutes a day, three times a week and you’ll be fit for life!”

John’s balloon line quickly grew and he was busy till the event closed at 4:00, making dogs, cats, the occasional motorcycle, and all the other colorful balloon creatures and toys he knows how to make. He took a break to eat lunch and enjoy the hooping, but the pictures didn’t get uploaded.

Whereever he goes, John the Balloon man makes friends and creates fans.
